Last weekend, I had the pleasure of a weekend away with Mr. VC, to kick start our Christmas festivities at Dimpsey Glamping in Somerset.
Escapes away are definitely not just for the finer months of the year. In fact, it’s the colder, darker days of Autumn and Winter that I always seem to need a little extra down time to relax and recuperate from the daily rat race. As someone with an over-active brain, I relish all opportunities to become engaged in the world around me and this is one of the reasons why Dimpsey Glamping really appealed as the perfect experience to rejuvenate mind, body and soul.
Somerset is a wonderfully lush part of the U.K., even at this part of the year, and as the concrete roads gave way to lanes and green fields, I could not wait to set my eyes on the Shepherd Hut that would be my weekend retreat. Located on a Doomsday book listed farm, Dimpsey offer luxury Shepherd Hut stays in super chic accommodation. The online booking process is incredibly straightforward and the website provides a hive of essential and inspirational info for your Glamping break. As soon as the hut came into view on that very blustery day, my heart skipped a beat. Adorned with fairy lights, overlooking Somerset landscape, not to mention the sight of George, the goose and his feathered friends, all contributed to a wonderful welcome.
As the stable door was opened, the most welcoming hut of luxury and comfort peeks back, and owner, Emma greets each guest with a fully loaded ‘Dimpsey Tea Tray’. There is nothing more wonderful than a beautifully served pot of tea and a home baked mince pie after a long car journey. The hut is undeniable beautiful, both inside and out, and the interior has been expertly styled by Emma with a variety of U.K. based artisan creative brands and a good sprinkle of stunning, vintage accent pieces. Within minutes we were both feeling relaxed, content and very cosy with the wind howling outside as we listened to the radio and dozed on the daybed, soaking up the atmosphere.
The hut is incredibly well designed and the space works so well. The main area is split into a kitchen area with hob, sink and fridge, with a spacious day bed that can be converted to bunk beds and then a seating area with table that transforms into a fold down double bed for night time. The delightful bathroom, with shower, is off to one side and is perfectly sized too. There is lots of hidden storage areas within the hut for even the most fastidious of packers and the cupboards and fridge are stocked with locally produced breakfast produce and lots of lovely extras which really make you feel thoroughly looked after. As a self-claimed ‘lover of the little things’, it is the endless seemingly small details at Dimpsey that make it feel so magical.
I don’t think words can quite capture the atmosphere of Dimpsey, in so many respects, it almost feels like stepping back in time, yet, it manages to retain that luxurious comfort and beautifully styled interiors that create the perfect retreat experience. It is absolutely an experience, be it stocking the log burner or strolling though the fields or even reading, wrapped in a blanket, as the rain beats against the windows, every activity that I engaged with was undeniably soul soothing. It just feels so right.
We seemed to do so much during our short stay; We indulged in ‘Hot Chocolate Corner’, played endless games of Dominoes, watched the winter sunrise, whilst serenaded by our bovine neighbours. Each simple experience of our stay, each beautiful sight, sound and sensation are the treasured memories of tomorrow and I will return to Dimpsey for more of it’s magic; I long to smell the Lavender that surrounds the hut, drifting on the Summer breeze, I am compelled to pack a basket of knitting to sit on the steps with, in Spring sunshine and I crave to create another Winter’s tale within the warm embrace of the Dimpsey Shepherd hut.
